Why East Suffolk needs SSDAB
More local radio choice for a diverse region
Limited local DAB choice
The Ipswich and Felixstowe area currently has very few locally-focused stations available on DAB. Most digital radio output originates from outside Suffolk, leaving a gap for genuinely local content.
A large, underserved audience
With nearly 190,000 residents across the coverage area, East Suffolk represents a significant audience for community, specialist and commercial broadcasters who want to reach a local listenership.
Growing demand for digital radio
DAB and DAB+ listening continues to grow nationally. Small-scale DAB gives community and independent stations the same digital platform as national broadcasters, at a fraction of the cost.
Supporting local voices
From Ipswich's multicultural communities to Felixstowe's port workers and coastal residents, East Suffolk has diverse audiences whose stories and interests are not currently reflected on local DAB.

Towns and areas within the footprint
Ipswich
Suffolk's county town and largest urban centre, with a population of around 140,000. Ipswich has a rich cultural and sporting identity but is currently underserved by locally-focused digital radio. SSDAB would open the door to genuinely local voices.
Felixstowe
Home to the UK's busiest container port and a vibrant seaside community. Felixstowe — including Walton and Old Felixstowe — has a distinct identity that deserves its own local radio presence on DAB.
Kesgrave & Martlesham
Fast-growing residential and business communities on the eastern edge of Ipswich, including the Martlesham Heath technology park. Both sit firmly within the proposed East Suffolk SSDAB coverage footprint.
Rushmere St Andrew & Claydon
Established residential communities to the north and east of Ipswich, within the proposed coverage footprint.
Bramford, Great Blakenham & Needham Market
Villages and small towns along the Gipping Valley corridor, connecting Ipswich with mid-Suffolk. These communities sit within the proposed East Suffolk SSDAB coverage area.
Trimley St Mary & Trimley St Martin
Twin villages on the Felixstowe Peninsula, between Ipswich and the port. Both fall within the proposed coverage footprint.
Walton & Old Felixstowe
Residential neighbourhoods forming the northern and historic parts of the Felixstowe urban area, both within the proposed East Suffolk SSDAB coverage.
Dovercourt & Harwich
The Harwich peninsula, including Dovercourt, sits at the southern edge of the proposed East Suffolk SSDAB coverage area — bringing DAB+ to a community currently underserved by local digital radio.
Woodbridge & Melton
Woodbridge and Melton sit outside the Ofcom advertised polygon but are shown on our coverage maps as a potential addition, subject to technical feasibility and Ofcom approval. Final coverage will depend on transmitter site, power, antenna height, terrain and Ofcom approval. We will confirm once coverage planning is complete.
